How to Prepare Your Drywalls for Patching
Patching a drywall is not an easy task, especially if you have never patched before. The key to a successful repair is planning ahead. If you’ve done all of the prep work, it will be much easier to actually patch your drywall. The more prepared you are, the less time it will take and the better job you’ll do! Here’s a patching preparation guide from a professional patching contractor:
Remove All Damaged Drywall
The first thing you need to do is remove all damaged drywall. You can use a hammer and chisel to remove the damaged drywall, or if you have a utility knife available, that would be better. Just make sure that when you cut out the damaged drywall, leave enough room for your patching compound to be applied over it later on!
Sand Out the Holes
You’re going to need a drywall sander and a drywall knife. The sander is for sanding out the holes, but you also have to use the knife to scrape out any remaining drywall compound in the hole. Don’t worry if you don’t get it all, just get as much as you can. Don’t use a power sander because it will be too aggressive and could rip through your newly patched area or even damage your wallboard below it!
Prime and Paint
Prime and paint the exposed surfaces. This will ensure that your patching material adheres to the wall, and also helps to cover up any imperfections in your drywall. Once it’s dry, sand down any rough spots on top of your patch with 120-grit sandpaper until it feels smooth under your fingertips. Then prime again and paint over this area one more time before applying new drywall compound to finish your repair job.
Clean Up Loose Compound
Now that you’ve applied your patch and smoothed it out, it’s time to clean up any loose drywall compound. This is crucial because if you don’t clean up all the dust, it can get mixed into your next coat of compound, making a mess of things later on. To do this step properly, use a vacuum cleaner with a nozzle attachment and gently suck up any loose pieces of drywall compound.
